Need advice

Journal Entry: Sun Mar 6, 2011, 10:52 PM
It's stupid, but here goes:

Any of you guys have any tips on procrastination? 'Cause this is getting out of hand. Seriously, I put a pencil on a piece of paper to start with homework, and the next minute I'm bagging outlaws in Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath or playing Poker Night at the Inventory with no recollection of how I jumped from one to the other.

The midterm for animation class is due Tuesday night (which usually wouldn't be a problem - I've been able to do some simple animations using traditional tools in just a few hours - but this class is focused on Flash, which I suck at even worse than Photoshop), and you know what I've done? A very rough blue pencil animation of a freaking bush. And that's all I've finished - from the first scene (four scenes total, but the third one's about five seconds long and a bit complex). I know I'm lazy, but this is getting ridiculous.

  • Mood: Content
  • Listening to: Fugue and Dies Irae (Sam & Max: Season 2 OST)
  • Reading: The Animator's Survival Kit
  • Watching: The Big Lebowski
  • Playing: Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath

Where are you trying to perform your work? If you have access to the resources elsewhere, you might want to go there and work instead, since that'll take you away from the distractions. It sucks harder than anything else, especially when the distractions are things you enjoy, but it works, especially if you're going to a place that's meant for work and work only. I had similar troubles recently, and this worked for me, but since you're working in Flash, I'm not sure which options you have available. Still, it's worth a shot; even putting the program on a laptop and bringing it some place quiet where you can focus would probably help.

I know this comes a bit late, but I wish you the best of luck.

A lot of it seems to have to do with your work space. Try to keep it organized so you can keep only what your working on at the time there. As far as getting pulled away for games, being a problem, you can always unplug, uninstall, or just block from using. Even putting a note on what you should be working on instead of playing on the game help. Lot of times it just keeping your brain from switching off and doing something mindless.

Frankly, I'm a terrible procrastinator. I have stories mostly written out but I never want to type them. I also find, I work better "with" distraction.

I have a friend chat with me on skype while I work, likely about the project at hand. They don't bother me when I stop talking (when I'm in the groove) and if my mind starts to stray they ask about what I just did.

So, it's no longer a chore, it's a new way to play.

In any case, good luck!

If you can find another place where you can work without all your distractions around you, that can be a big help. Or find a buddy. someone who can give you the stinkeye if you start woolgathering.

This of course assumes that your workstation is portable of course...

I procrastinate all the time too. One of the reasons why I dropped out of college.

As for advice? All I can really say is you just REALLY gotta concentrate and push yourself to do the things you don't want to do.

Just start with simple doodles, or practice some thing. A lot of my friends begin a drawing streak with a request or two to break the creative ice.
